Ohio voters passed a referendum which will legalize casinos in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Toledo, Ohio’s four biggest cities. Over the past 19 years Ohioans have voted down gambling proposals on four occasions. This year more than half of voters turned out in support of the referendum. The casino-friendly Ohio Jobs & Growth committee rallied for the referendum, insisting that the construction of the four casinos would bring 34,000 permanent jobs and 19,000 construction jobs starting next year. Ohio currently has an 11% unemployment rate.

But what does this mean for Atlantic City, which is also facing stiff competition from surrounding states that are looking to expand their gambling? Just this past September charter flights arrived from Cleveland, Akron, Columbus, and Youngstown with the majority of travelers looking to gamble at Atlantic City casinos. The South Jersey Transportation Authority which operates ACY does not have a hard breakdown of the number of charter passengers from Ohio, but did note that casinos have been lobbying for scheduled service from Chicago and midwest states to help bring more business to Atlantic City.

Sharon Gordon, Transportation Authority spokesperson, said on the subject, “Our target for opening up new destinations would be anything east of the Mississippi, a nice short flight to Atlantic City International.” Whether or not these efforts will be impeded by the vote in Ohio and whether these new casinos will have a negative impact on Atlantic City remains yet to be seen.

Thunder Over the Boardwalk, 2007 Edition Atlantic City, NJ

The fifth annual Atlantic City Airshow, “Thunder Over the Boardwalk” went into the history books on August 15^{th, and by all accounts it was another rousing success. City estimates put the crowd at somewhere in the area of 500,000 people.}

^{Atlantic City’s airshow has become the second-largest beachfront airshow in the country, ranking behind only Fort Lauderdale’s Air and Sea Show, which is typically held in the first week of May. Also, rumors are swirling regarding the 2008 airshow headliner. The Navy’s Blue Angels have expressed a strong interest in returning to AC after their special co-starring appearance with the Air Force’s Thunderbirds in 2006, which celebrated the Blues’ 60th anniversary. Those directly in the know on the topic say that the Blues want to return because of the high level of hospitality and professionalism associated with “Thunder Over the Boardwalk” and also due to the uniquely long show line (industry-speak for the length of airspace that the crowd has access to) that AC’s beach and Boardwalk present. While the usual land-based airshow typically uses a runway for a show line that is somewhere around 10,000 feet long (just under two miles), the four-mile strip of AC beach makes for a longer and thinner crowd line that in turn makes for more fun for the displaying pilots. Atlantic City’s reputation as an airshow city has also extended to the far North, as there is even interest on the part of Canada’s Snowbirds Demonstration Team in flying next year’s show. The Snowbirds are no stranger to Southern New Jersey, as they have flown at the Millville “Wheels and Wings” show in the last few years. No matter which US team pays a visit next year, the Snowbirds might still make an appearance, as they fly a handful of shows every year in the US, and they are often accompanied on the bill by an American jet team.}

Should the Congress allow Sports Betting in Atlantic City if a bill is created and submitted?

First, let me say I’m a huge believer that legalized Sports Betting in Atlantic City will help to catapult the cities future growth.  Here are some valid reasons to support this statement:

#1 - With addition of Philadelphia Riverfront Casinos in 2007, slot parlors at Delaware Park and Philadelphia Park Race Tracks and a new casino being built in the Pennsylvania Pocono’s, Atlantic City needs an edge to compete.  The largest number of bet’s come in for the SuperBowl held each February.  January and February are the 2 slowest months for Atlantic City Casinos and hotel occupancy.  This will boost business for these winter slow periods.

#2 - Billions of dollars are being bet via Online Sports Books and illegal book makers on an annual basis, legalized Sports Betting in Atlantic City will take a large share of these bet’s, AC would be the only place on the East Coast to make a legal sports bet.

#3 - The fact that New Jersey has sports teams and a large number of universities that would be exempt from betting is no big deal.  In Las Vegas several teams are removed from betting, ie UNLV etc.

In Closing, anyone supporting the Legalization of Atlantic City should rally behind the effort and reach out to Jeff Vandrew to see what he or she can do to help.  Let’s take a stand and make something happen that will guarantee the growth of our ATLANTIC CITY, NJ.

Geographic’s 

Atlantic City is a beach community located in Southern New Jersey between Ventnor, NJ and Brigantine, NJ.  It’s approximately 2.5 miles long by 5 miles wide and is a barrier island with only bridges to get in and out.  It’s located at 39°21′54″N, 74°26′21″W (39.364966, -74.439034) on the GPS.  Atlantic City, New Jersey is located in the south eastern corner of the state of NJ.  New Jersey is located between Delaware and New York with Pennsylvania located to its western border.  It’s a very flat city as is most of the state.  The tallest buildings in South Jersey reside along the beachfront and go as high as 42 Stories high also known as the Casinos.

Climate

Summers in Atlantic City are getting longer and winters are becoming milder every year.  Average temperatures are above 65 degrees from May to October.  The average Temperature for the year is 58.5 degrees.  Golfers are now playing year round and basically never snows.

Golf Courses

Casinos 

Atlantic City, NJ currently has 11 casinos.  Several changes have occurred over the last few years, for example, the Sands Casino closed in 2006 and the Claridge Casino was bought and merged into Bally’s Atlantic City.  The Trump Regency was knocked down about 5 years ago.  This leaves the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa, Harrah’s, Trump Marina, Showboat and House of Blues Casino, Trump Taj Mahal, Resorts Casino, Bally’s, Caesar’s, Trump Plaza, Tropicana and the Hilton casino as the remaining Atlantic City Casinos.  There a few new casinos that will be built in the next few years and plenty new expansion projects that will help the destination grow.  Pinnacle Entertainment Inc will knock down the Sands and construct a 1.5 to 2.5 billion dollar mega casino in its place.  MGM Mirage Gaming Inc recently announced a plan to construct a new casino resort, tentatively called [ City Center East ], and closely designed after the company’s City Center project in Las Vegas. City Center East would be located on 55 acres of land between The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa and Harrah’s casino Atlantic City.  There is also the possibility that Steve Wynn and Donald Trump will hook up to build a Mega Resort, plus, several other projects are in the works.

Beaches and Boardwalk

Many people don’t know how incredible the Atlantic City beaches are.  You’ll feel fine white sand in your toes and warm water from June to September.  The Atlantic Ocean generally gets to about 65 degrees in June and as high as 75 degrees in July and August before it goes back down in September and early October.  One unique aspect of the beaches in Atlantic City is the width of the beach.  The distance from the waters edge to the dunes and boardwalk is approximately 40 to 50 yards or 120 to 150 feet.  The boardwalk is currently under revitalization (Spring of 2007) and is getting a makeover and attraction new stores and entertainment.  Take a stroll down the world famous boardwalk and visit the Atlantic City Beaches this summer.   

Atlantic City Hotels and Accommodations 

Atlantic City hotels compliment the areas casinos by offering lower prices for rooms during the high demand summer months.  There are all kinds of hotels and motels scattered about the city, some are located on the boardwalk and others on the strip also know as Pacific ave.  You will also see a large contingency of Hotels, Motels and Inns on the way in to Atlantic City, New Jersey.  From 2 star tourist class hotels like the El Greco Motel to 5 star Convention Center hotels like the Sheraton Atlantic City.  You’ll find hotels with suites and Jacuzzis in rooms such as the FantaSea Resort, Skyline Towers, Atlantic Palace Suites, Flagship Resort, La Renaissance Suites and the Comfort Inn Boardwalk.  Other Atlantic City hotels located within the city limits are Crown Motel, El Dorado Motor Inn, Days Inn Atlantic City, EconoLodge Boardwalk, Super 8 Atlantic City and the Quality Hotel Casino City.  You’ll also find a group of lodging chains on you way into town for example the Knights Inn, Ramada Limited, Red Roof Inn, Clarion Convention Center, Comfort Inn, Best Value, Holiday Inn Express, Econo Lodge Airport and many more.  You can see there several lodging options in Atlantic City, NJ.

Transportation

What’s the best way to get to Atlantic City, New Jersey?  The fastest is way is by automobile.  You can drive your car on major highways right into town and park in on of the ample Casino parking garages for $5 - $10 per day.  An Express Train from New York City to Atlantic City is in the works and will be ready to roll in 2007.  Currently you can take the train but must change trains in Philadelphia at 30th Street Station before making your way into Atlantic City.  The bus is another easy way to get to the Jersey shore.  Both Greyhound and Academy Bus have “Casino Express” type buses that run from New York, Philly, North Jersey, Washington, DC and Baltimore.
